In a 2012 interview with the Hindustan Times, Soha Ali Khan spoke about how her family first learned about Kunal Kemmu. She explained that she depended on her mother, Sharmila Tagore, to tell Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi about their relationship.Soha Ali Khan said, “I would’ve never told my father directly because we didn’t have discussions about boys. I relied on my mother to tell him. I must’ve told her and she is very liberal and trusting of my choices and not overtly concerned. She met Kunal on the sets of 99 and unfortunately he was doing a scene in which he had to wear a pink bathrobe.” Kunal immediately corrected her recollection of the bathrobe. He interrupted, “White bathrobe.” Soha Ali Khan then clarified, “Yeah. White bathrobe with shorts. She liked him immediately, and he is very good with mothers.”

Kunal Kemmu also recalled the first time he introduced Soha Ali Khan to his parents, Ravi Kemmu and Jyoti Kemmu. He described the meeting as casual and informal. Kemmu said, “It was quite casual and informal and I think they were slightly uncomfortable, especially my dad, because it was the first time, I was telling them that I’m seeing a woman.” The couple’s family introductions eventually became an important step in their relationship before marriage.
