‘Jailer 2’ action director reveals the blast behind Rajinikanth was real
Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar’s action entertainer ‘Jailer 2’ features several larger-than-life stunts and mass moments. One sequence that caught viewers’ attention in the trailer shows Rajinikanth standing in front of a massive explosion. Stunt and action director Chethan D’Souza has now revealed that the blast was real, although the team enhanced it slightly for the film.Speaking to India Today Digital, Chethan discussed his experience of working with Rajinikanth and Nelson, while offering a glimpse into how the team approached the film’s action sequences.“The blast behind Rajini sir that you have seen in the trailer is a live blast. We have enhanced it a little bit. You are going to see the behind-the-scenes footage after the film’s release. There are more such surprises in the film, not just that blast,” he said. The action director also hinted that the explosion is not the only moment audiences can look forward to, with more behind-the-scenes footage expected to reveal how some of the film’s action sequences were executed.
‘The director is very clear about what he wants’: Chethan D’Souza on Nelson Dilipkumar’s vision
Chethan also credited director Nelson Dilipkumar’s clarity of vision for helping the team create the film’s action sequences and larger-than-life moments. According to him, Nelson has a specific idea of how each scene should unfold, including the timing of an elevation moment and the music that accompanies it.“The director is very clear about what he wants, his idea of mass and the timing for elevation and the music. He is clear. He used to tell me the concepts, and I would give him input. Based on that, we would come up with something different,” he added.Chethan explained that the action was designed around Rajinikanth’s character rather than simply making every fight sequence bigger or more elaborate. The intention was to create an impact through the character’s movements and screen presence.“According to that, he is fighting. The idea is to show big things with minimal movement,” he said.
‘He treats everyone as equals’: Chethan D’Souza praises Rajinikanth’s humility
Chethan also spoke about Rajinikanth’s conduct on set, recalling how the superstar’s willingness to listen to the stunt team made their collaboration comfortable. He said the actor would actively ask whether his performance met the team’s requirements and whether any changes were needed.“When I am explaining something, the stuntman Rajini sir would ask, ‘Am I doing fine? Do you need any change from my side?’ Such a big man saying that is very comforting. It is not about big and small; he treats everyone as equals,” Chethan recalled.
