Legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78.His family confirmed the news in a statement, describing his passing as “sudden and unexpected.” They also clarified that his death was unrelated to his previous battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. Earlier this year, Neill had shared that he was cancer-free and was looking forward to continuing his acting career.Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill appeared in over 150 film and television projects. While he became a global star through Jurassic Park (1993), his acclaimed filmography also included Sleeping Dogs, My Brilliant Career, Possession, Omen III: The Final Conflict and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.Away from Hollywood, however, Neill found his greatest joy on his farm and vineyard in New Zealand.

Despite international stardom, Neill often said he never chased celebrity status. Instead, he preferred spending time at his Central Otago estate, home to his award-winning winery, Two Paddocks, and a large collection of farm animals.Many of his animals became internet favourites after Neill regularly featured them in humorous social media videos, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The animals, ranging from ducks and pigs to sheep and cattle, were famously named after his friends and colleagues, including Michael Caine, Meryl Streep, Graham Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.Speaking to the Chicago Tribune in 1995, Neill reflected on his unconventional approach to fame.“I’ve never had an image, nor have I fostered one or wanted one, which has meant that I’ve had fantastic freedom to do whatever it is that appeals at the time.”
His family remained largely out of the spotlight
Neill was known for keeping his personal life private. He married Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe in 1989 after the pair met while working on Dead Calm, which also starred Nicole Kidman.Watanabe built a successful career in the film industry, working on acclaimed productions including Hacksaw Ridge, Silence and The Power of the Dog, while also serving as a personal makeup artist for stars including Nicole Kidman and Liam Neeson.The couple separated in 2017 after nearly three decades together.Before his marriage, Neill was in a long-term relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow, his Omen III co-star. They welcomed a son together during their relationship.

Neill is survived by four children.His eldest son, Andrew, was placed for adoption when the actor was in his early twenties. The two reunited 25 years later after searching for each other.Speaking to The Times in 2014, Neill described their reunion as meaningful but far from the emotional scenes often portrayed in films.“No one sobs in anyone’s arms; it’s much more grown-up,” he said.Neill also shared a son, Tim, with Lisa Harrow.With Watanabe, he had a daughter, Elena, and also adopted her daughter from a previous relationship, Maiko.Elena briefly appeared in acting projects before pursuing a career as a tattoo artist in Melbourne, Australia. Both Elena and Maiko later became mothers, making Neill a proud grandfather.
