Newlyweds Aditya Seal and Anushka Ranjan have opened up their first home together, a whimsical Mumbai duplex designed by Quirk Studio’s Disha Bhavsar and Shivani Ajmera. As per Architectural Digest, the space blends English country charm with playful, personal touches, from a neon “seal” light at the entrance to pastel walls, herringbone flooring and Anushka’s own artwork. Built on a tight pre-wedding timeline, the home reflects the couple’s remarkably aligned aesthetic sensibilities.

The couple’s Mumbai duplex announces its personality right from the doorway, where a cheery LED baby seal stands in for a traditional nameplate, a nod to the couple’s shared surname.As per a Architectural Digest feature from 2022, Anushka Ranjan enjoys watching visitors try to decode it, sharing, “It’s fun to watch people guess. Those who get it, get it. And it makes for a great conversation-starter.”A peach-toned front door, inspired by Anushka’s love for English country houses, further sets the tone for what lies beyond.
The couple had only a few months to design their first home
Anushka and Aditya bought the apartment in November 2020, just months before their wedding, leaving them with little time to spare. A quick social media search led them to designers Disha Bhavsar and Shivani Ajmera of Quirk Studio, whose efficient turnaround sealed the deal.Bhavsar recalled the brief given to her, explaining, “The brief was to create a space that was warm, full of light; with textures, muted colours and patterns.”Aditya added that comfort was a priority from the start, noting, “We were clear about steering away from touch-me-not accents and easily dirtied furniture that would make guests feel uncomfortable.”The couple even travelled to Dubai with their mothers to shop for furniture, with Anushka explaining they were drawn to “rounder, softer shapes than the ones available locally.”
Pastel colours and personal keepsakes give the home a warm feel
The home features two distinct living rooms, one formal and one for everyday family use, tied together by a singular palette of white and beige.Ajmera explained the design logic behind the choice, noting, “Despite being functionally different, the two shells are aesthetically cohesive, with a singular palette of white and beige.” The more relaxed, informal living room is anchored by an exposed brick wall that lends a rustic, lived-in feel to the seating area.
A home built on shared taste
Designer Disha Bhavsar noted that working with Anushka and Aditya was unusually smooth, given how closely their design instincts aligned.She said, “Whether it was material palettes, prints or even colour choices, they were always on the same page which seldom happens for a couple. It eradicated design differences and confusion, and made our work as designers easy.” The resulting palette leans into soft whites and pastels, warmed by wooden flooring, with Ajmera describing the overall effect as one that “channels a tranquil sanctuary.”Personal mementos from the couple’s pre-wedding days are scattered throughout, alongside a corner stool that bears an uncanny resemblance to their pet dog, Mija, a detail Aditya calls his favourite piece of furniture in the house.
Wooden flooring, wallpapers and neon signs add character
Variety runs through the home’s design language, with herringbone wood patterns in the living, dining and vanity areas giving way to diagonal layouts in the bedrooms. Distinct wallpapers, including a botanical print behind the bar and a palm print near the staircase, add texture and depth to the walls. Neon signage lends the space a tony, cafe-like energy, while an open-plan library doubles as the couple’s favourite spot to unwind. The artworks on display, sourced from The Calcutta Restoration Company and Nook At You, are complemented by a few original pieces from Anushka herself, who took up painting during the pandemic lockdown, sharing, “I took to painting during the first lockdown when there was nothing else to do. And happily, a few pieces came out display-worthy.”
