When R Madhavan said son Vedaant was still far from the Olympics, revealed how he taught him the difference between success, fame and popularity: ‘It is wrong to compare kids’

Actor R Madhavan’s son Vedaant is an athlete and quite popular, however, the actor has always made sure to keep him grounded with reality checks time and again. The actor also acknowledged that Vedaant receives considerable media attention because of his celebrity status, something both father and son are conscious of. Vedaant is a swimmer and has often represented India at several global platforms. He was recently a part of Asian Games 2026 and competed in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, the 200m freestyle, and the 200m backstroke. However, in an interview few years back, Madhavan had revealed how he is still far from Olympics.“His achievements are good but he is nowhere close to the Olympics,” Madhavan said in an earlier interview with Lallantop Cinema. “Because he is my son, he is getting a lot of attention, which both of us realise. He realises it, so he is keeping his head low.”The actor also recalled advising Vedaant to understand the difference between sporting success and the attention that comes with it. He said he wanted his son to remain grounded after winning a medal at an international competition brought him into the spotlight.“I am more of a philosophical friend, less of his father,” Madhavan said. “For example, he won a medal and he got very popular. So I explained it to him that there is a huge difference between success, fame and popularity. Don’t consider fame and popularity to be yours, because at his age it is very easy to confuse each thing. You still have a long way to go for success.”Madhavan also spoke against the tendency to compare celebrity children, pointing out how such comparisons can affect young people who are still finding their feet. He believes children should be allowed to grow at their own pace instead of being judged against their peers based on their appearance, career choices or early accomplishments.“I believe it is wrong to compare kids between each other. It breaks their hearts. It feels very wrong,” Madhavan said. “You can’t just put kids of the same age in a mould and compare, saying they’ll become successful or not. Star kids are kids after all. It is very important to protect and safeguard them. My family doesn’t like these comparisons. We don’t engage with it or encourage it.”Born in 2006, Vedaant is the son of R Madhavan and his wife, Sarita Birje. He began training in competitive swimming at a young age and has represented India at several international junior-level competitions. In 2022, when he was 16, Vedaant won a silver medal in the 800m freestyle at the Danish Open in Copenhagen, bringing him considerable attention across the country.Madhavan has previously spoken about the family’s decision to move to Dubai to ensure that Vedaant had access to better swimming facilities and coaching infrastructure. The move also involved a significant personal and financial commitment from the family to support his sporting ambitions. While the actor frequently attends his son’s competitions and shares updates about his progress on social media, he has maintained that Vedaant must carve out his own path. For Madhavan, the focus remains on allowing his son to develop as an athlete without letting public attention get ahead of his achievements.
