Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom emerged as the centrepiece of Marvel Studios’ latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ footage, with the new material offering a deeper look at the villain’s backstory, his motivations and his powers that even bring the God of Thunder to his knees. The footage unveiled at D23, expanded on the story teased in the previously released official trailer.

Doctor Doom’s tragic past revealed

The new footage explores Doom’s relationship with the Fantastic Four, particularly Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue narrates Victor’s transformation to the Avengers, Shang Chi, the X-Men, Steve Rogers and Shuri. She explains, “Victor was always the smartest guy in every room. He used to be differnet H used to be kind, he used to be caring. And then, everything he loved was taken from him. I knew he was lost, but I did not realize he was broken.”The footage then cuts to Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards confronting Doom and asking, “Did you do this,” before Doom responds with a chilling explanation of his intentions. “All of you have lived stolen lives. But now you must give them back.”The sequence cuts between shots of the heroes and glimpses of their personal lives, including moments with their families, before shifting to visuals of Doom touching a tapestry of his wife and son.

Doctor Doom overpowers Thor

One of the most talked-about moments in the footage features Chris Hemsworth’s Thor confronting Doom. Much like shown in the trailer, Thor charges at Doom with Stormbreaker and declares, “I swear you will beg for hell long before I grant it.”Doom, however, stops the attack with just two fingers before effortlessly overpowering Thor and sending him flying with a burst of green energy. He then delivers one of the footage’s most ominous lines, “Hell answers to me.”The footage ends with Doom raising an army of Sentinels, thus connecting the film’s central conflict to the X-Men.‘Avengers: Doomsday’ plotIn “Avengers: Doomsday,” beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.
