Rashmika Mandanna is stepping into a very different space with her next film. The actress will portray legendary Carnatic singer and Bharat Ratna awardee MS Subbulakshmi in the upcoming biopic ‘M.S – A Legacy On Screen.’ The project was officially launched on September 16, marking the 110th birth anniversary celebrations of the music icon. Directed by ‘Jersey’ fame Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film brings together a notable team, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. The launch event was held at the Music Academy in Chennai, with Kamal Haasan giving the first clap.

Speaking at the launch, Rashmika Mandanna opened up about the responsibility of portraying a personality as revered as MS Subbulakshmi. The actress said she feels grateful to have been chosen for the role and promised to approach it with complete sincerity. “I feel very proud to speak in front of you all. Right now, I have only one feeling in my heart, and that is gratitude,” Rashmika said. Talking about the legendary singer’s voice, she added, “There is a unique divine power in your voice. When listening to it, I genuinely feel like I am sitting in the presence of God.” Rashmika also addressed Subbulakshmi directly, saying, “Amma, you chose me to be a small part of your life – for that, I am always grateful, and I always will be. I will definitely give my best, I promise.”

Kamal Haasan, who attended the launch, spoke about MS Subbulakshmi’s lasting influence and the challenge before Rashmika. He described the singer as India’s “pan-Indian lady superstar” and pointed out how her music reached audiences across regions and languages. Kamal noted that Subbulakshmi’s songs in Sanskrit, Hindi and other languages helped her connect with people beyond one particular region. He also stressed that playing her would require more than simply copying her appearance or mannerisms. Rashmika will have to bring the singer’s personality and emotional depth to the screen.
