40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey, the head of engineering for games player experience of New York Times, was shot dead by his elderly Chinese in-laws in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds, reports said. The incident took place around 3pm on Saturday. A spokesperson for the NYT confirmed to NY Post that McKinsey who had been working for the newspaper since 2023 was the victim of the attack.Eyewitnesses were shocked as the entire shooting took place in broad daylight. Two masked assailants approached McKinsey and they took turns unloading bullets into the victim. McKinsey fell to the ground. A passing cop immediately arrested the assailants, identified as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77.The couple are facing a slew of charges including murder, felony conspiracy, child endangerment, and dangerously firing a gun.Zhang, who stands 5ft 8in and weighs 165 pounds, allegedly carried out the attack alongside his wife, who measures just 5ft 2in and weighs 110 pounds, according to Alameda County Sheriff’s Office inmate records. Zhang and Chen were booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder. McKinsey had been married to their daughter Candice Jang, NY Post revealed.“I saw the guy drop to the floor. Head bloody and chest bloody,” eyewitness Assad Razawi told ABC News.Police have not released any other details and the motive for the killing is not clear either.But a probable cause declaration, as reported by Daily Mail, said a woman claimed to police that her husband, identified as McKinsey, had struck her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand. The woman also told investigators about an alleged prior domestic violence incident in 2018, claiming McKinsey had bruised her by grabbing her left arm. In that incident, deputies arrived to McKinsey’s home to find a two-year-old child left unattended in an upstairs bedroom while McKinsey had left to go shopping. McKinsey pleaded not guilty in both incidents, and had been released on bail on the condition that he complete 12 parenting classes.Before helming the Times’ games platform, McKinsey was engineering manager at Splunk, and he had previously studied at UC Berkeley.
