A controversy involving Rajasthani rapper Rapperiya Baalam and the makers of ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ appears to have been resolved, after music label Trouper Records confirmed that the song ‘Shoorveer’ was legally licensed for use in the film. This comes after the rapper alleged the track had been used without his consent.
Music label responds to Rapperiya Baalam’s allegation with clarification
Rapperiya Baalam, whose real name is Ashok Bishnoi, had claimed that Excel Entertainment used ‘Shoorveer’ in the film without informing him, specifically in a scene that he felt ended up glorifying gangsters.Addressing the allegations without directly referencing them, Trouper Records, the label owning the song, issued a statement confirming proper licensing. “Trouper Records is pleased to share that Shoorveer was officially licensed to Excel Entertainment for in-film use in Mirzapur: The Film. Congratulations to Excel Entertainment and the entire Mirzapur team on the release! @excelmovies,” the statement read.The label also shared the song’s official credits, naming Rapperiya Baalam as both the singer and composer of ‘Shoorveer’.
Rapperiya Baalam’s allegation against Excel Entertainment
Earlier, in an Instagram video, the rapper expressed his hurt over the matter. He said, “Some of you may ask why my heart is broken. You might say I should be happy because my song is in ‘Mirzapur’. But the ‘Mirzapur’ team did not take my permission to use my song. Who gave them the permission? I certainly did not.”He further explained the song’s significance and his objection to its usage. He added, “This song is dedicated to Maharana Pratap ji. We are using this song to glorify the villains in the movie. Is this right? If the ‘Mirzapur’ team had approached me and said, ‘Rapperiya bhai, we want to use your song,’ we would have given them 10 ideas. But taking the song without permission is not right.”The rapper also raised doubts about how the rights to the song were obtained. He further stated, “I don’t know who gave you these rights or from whom you obtained them. Whoever gave you the rights, I would like you to ask them: Do you have any copyright?”
