‘Hanuman Ansh’ has emerged as an unexpected box-office success, but the story behind Shobinaw Satyaa’s casting as Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj Ji, is equally remarkable. Satyaa was working as the film’s second assistant director when the actor originally cast in the lead role fell ill. Director Vishal Chaturvedi then tested Satyaa for nearly five hours before handing him the central role. Recalling the extraordinary turn of events in a conversation with India Today, Satyaa said, “One day I was an assistant director on the film, and the next morning I was playing the lead character.”The actor’s journey has since attracted considerable attention, with viewers praising his performance and pointing out his striking resemblance to Neem Karoli Baba.

How Shobinaw Satyaa landed the role of Neem Karoli Baba

Satyaa’s association with ‘Hanuman Ansh’ began behind the camera. He was working as the second assistant director and was handling props and other production responsibilities when the actor originally cast as Neem Karoli Baba suddenly fell ill. With the set ready and the team already assembled, Chaturvedi decided that filming could not be halted. He therefore considered Satyaa for the role and put him through an extensive test. Satyaa recalled feeling anxious about whether audiences would accept him as Maharaj Ji.“At that time I was thinking like a journalist. I kept wondering what would happen if people did not accept me. What if people thought, what have they done, whom have they made Baba? All this was going on in my mind,” he said.

Director Vishal Chaturvedi tested Satyaa for five hours

Chaturvedi eventually put Satyaa through a five-hour audition before making the decision to cast him. Satyaa said the sudden change left him overwhelmed, but the director reassured him that the responsibility of deciding whether he was right for the role rested with him.“I kept thinking, what will happen? What will the world say? But director sir calmed me down. He told me that thinking about all this was not my responsibility, but his. It happened very suddenly and I was blank,” Satyaa said during a conversation with AajTak.The unusual casting decision has since become one of the most talked-about aspects of ‘Hanuman Ansh’, particularly after viewers noticed how closely Satyaa resembles Neem Karoli Baba.

Shobinaw Satyaa calls his casting a ‘miracle’

For Satyaa, the unexpected opportunity was more than a career breakthrough. He viewed his casting in spiritual terms, particularly because of his longstanding devotion to Neem Karoli Baba.“When some divine power is writing a story for you, you do not need to use your mind too much. You only need to surrender. Babaji, you have done this, and whatever happens will be right,” he said.Satyaa revealed that he has been a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba since 2009 and has followed a spiritual way of life for several years. In 2018, he also began observing a Tuesday fast dedicated to Lord Hanuman and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle. He believes these experiences now make his journey to playing Maharaj Ji feel almost as though he had been prepared for the role years before he knew it was coming his way.

How Satyaa prepared to play Neem Karoli Baba

Playing Neem Karoli Baba required Satyaa to understand the spiritual figure beyond his physical appearance. He said he relied heavily on Chaturvedi’s extensive research into Baba’s life, teachings and spirituality. At the same time, the director encouraged Satyaa not to completely imitate the character. Instead, he asked him to retain his natural mannerisms, including the way he spoke, laughed and interacted with people. Chaturvedi also acknowledged the resemblance between Satyaa and Neem Karoli Baba. Speaking to AajTak, the director said the team had photographed Satyaa during his trial, and the resemblance became one of the factors that convinced him he could portray Maharaj Ji on screen.

‘Hanuman Ansh’ connects with audiences across generations

Hanuman Ansh was released in cinemas on August 7, 2026. Made on a reported budget of Rs 1.80 crore, the film has gone on to become a notable theatrical success. Satyaa believes the film’s appeal extends across age groups, with its spiritual themes offering something for different generations.“I cannot even begin to tell you how much there is to learn from this film. There is something in it for children, something for older people and something for every generation,” he said.
