Ameesha Patel regrets rejecting Salman Khan’s ‘Tere Naam’ despite loving the script and songs: 'It is definitely my loss'

Ameesha Patel has just revealed that she was Salman Khan‘s first choice for the film’s lead role and that turning it down remains one of her most significant career regrets. In a candid trip down memory lane, Ameesha Patel has opened up about one of the biggest “what-ifs” of her career. The ‘Gadar 2’ actress recently revealed that she was the original choice for the 2003 cult classic ‘Tere Naam’, but ultimately turned down the role that eventually went to Bhumika Chawla.

Ameesha Patel expresses regret over rejecting ‘Tere Naam’

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Ameesha Patel admitted that looking back, she wishes she had made a different decision regarding the Satish Kaushik directorial.“Kaash main mana nahi karti. Lekin uss waqt jab Salman offer ki thi sirf gaane ban chuki thi aur ye film ka idea aur kahaani thi. Unhone mujhe narrate kiya, gaane bhi sunaaye. Tab na dates tay thi aur direct kaun karega ye bhi tay nahi tha. It was all up in the air.” (I regret declining the offer. At the time Salman approached me, only the music and the core concept were ready. He narrated the story and played the tracks for me, but there were no fixed filming dates and a director hadn’t been finalized yet. Everything was still in the developmental stages.”Ameesha Patel noted that while Salman Khan was incredibly passionate about the project from the start, the lack of a finalized director or shooting schedule made it difficult for her to commit at that stage. The ‘Gadar’ actress explained that the film’s development phase was quite lengthy, with the project moving through several potential directors before the late Satish Kaushik eventually took the helm.“Kuch set nahi tha and as an actor I could not take away time that I had given to numerous people. Agar Salman had come to me with a set date and a set director and said that we are ready to roll, then of course main ‘Tere Naam’ jaisi film mana nahi karti. Of course, it was such a beautiful film and mujhe kahani bohot pasand aayi thi. Mujhe gaane bohot pasand aaye thhe. So yeah, it is definitely my loss.” (Nothing was set in stone, and as an actor, I couldn’t take back the time I had already committed to other people. If Salman had approached me with a fixed date and a finalized director and said we were ready to start filming, then of course I wouldn’t have turned down a film like ‘Tere Naam’. It was such a beautiful film; I loved the story and I loved the songs. So yeah, it is definitely my loss.)By the time the production was ready to “roll,” Ameesha was already committed to other projects, leaving her unable to accommodate the dates required for the intense love story.

About ‘Tere Naam’

Released in 2003, ‘Tere Naam’ was a remake of the Tamil film ‘Sethu’ and became a career-defining moment for Salman Khan. His portrayal of the obsessive, troubled lover Radhe became iconic, as did his “middle-parted” hairstyle which sparked a nationwide trend. While Ameesha missed out, the film served as a major launchpad for Bhumika Chawla, who won hearts as the innocent Nirjara. Composed by Himesh Reshammiya, the soundtrack remains one of the most beloved in Bollywood history.
