The 72th National Film Awards took place today at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, Gujarat, in a historic first for the prestigious event. For the first time in over 70 years, the National Film Awards ceremony took place outside New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards at the prestigious ceremony which was held against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity. While the list of winners were announced a few months ago, today, Kartik Aaryan, Yami Gautam, Mammootty and many others reached Gujarat for the ceremony.Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty jointly received the Best Actor in a Leading role, from the President. Kartik has been recognised for his performance in ‘Chandu Champion’, while Mammootty has won the honour for ‘Bramayugam’. Yami Gautam has been named Best Actress in a Leading Role for ‘Article 370’, which has also taken home the Best Feature Film award.One of the major highlights of the ceremony was the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 to veteran actor Anant Nag. The country’s highest honour for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema recognises his more than five-decade-long career, which includes several notable works in Kannada and Indian cinema.Several acclaimed films and filmmakers have also been recognised across categories. ‘Amaran’ won Rajkumar Periasamy the Best Direction award, while ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has been named Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Randeep Hooda has received the Best Debut Film of a Director award for ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’.
